Do you have a web site for your business yet? If not how about at least getting the domain name secured? What do I mean by that statement? Your domain name is the web address for your web site. It is typically in the format of www.yourname.com and it's what people use to access your web page. You will hear it called the domain name, web address or URL to name a few. In the past few years domain names have been coming harder to find. They are even traded like stocks and owners will have thousands of domains with a portfolio value of over $100 million
It doesn't take much to get a web address. Simply go to a Registrar like www.goDaddy.com and see if the name you want is available. If you are lucky enough grab it. If the name you want is already taken start looking for an alternative. My friends at The Starlite Room in Elmira wanted a web site and when we went to get the domain we found out that that is a very popular name. So we made some modifications and were able to pick up www.thestarliteroomelmira.com. A Little long but it worked well for their business.
Some of the things you may want to avoid are names that have more than one spelling. For example my own company name, System6 Software. I got both systemsixsoftware.com and system6software.com because visitors may not be sure which way I spelled the domain. I used to be involved with a company called 4netSoftware, Inc. This caused a lot of trouble because people weren't sure if it was for, four or 4. So we got them all and just pointed them to the one we wanted as our "official" site.
My biggest frustration is how people lament over the perfect name. They want a name that means something. I understand that sentiment but look at the most popular web sites, Amazon, Google, Yahoo, EBay. None of those domains meant anything until the company made them mean something. My brother operated a web site a few years back called Yolk. The domain yolk was taken so he grabbed goyolk.com. He did an excellent job of promoting that domain. He put it on everything he owned and every correspondence he sent. This brings me to another point. What looks better from a business standpoint? mikepark@stny.rr.com or parkm@system6software.com? Both emails will be delivered to me but the second one helps promote my business.
So go get your domain even if you are not ready to use it. Just secure it before someone else does. And if you are ready to use it well then call me and I will help you design a web site that meets your needs and your budget.
